"That is very difficult to describe in three words, but I can only say: excellent hope, excellent hope and excellent hope," a Bangladeshi expert said when asked to sum up his expectations for China-Bangladesh pharmaceutical cooperation and bilateral relations in a few words.
Md. Selim Reza, dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Dhaka, discussed cooperation with China in traditional medicine, pharmaceutical development and bilateral relations during an interview in Beijing on July 21.
Bangladesh's pharmaceutical industry is increasingly turning to traditional medicine, Reza said, with many ingredients now being sourced from China.
"In Bangladesh, pharmaceutical companies are importing a lot of ingredients from China. I was talking to a big company in Bangladesh that imports a large number of nutraceutical products and Chinese medicines from China,"Reza said. "These companies were traditionally focused on Western medicine, but nowadays many are turning to traditional medicine."
During his visit to China, Reza toured traditional medicine clinics in Shanghai and saw firsthand how the practice is woven into cultural education.
He said, "I have seen that the doctors can diagnose the diseases of the patients in a non-invasive way. So that could be very useful for us in Bangladesh."
Reflecting on the two countries' long-standing ties, Reza said China has been a significant partner for Bangladesh, with a strong friendship and bilateral cooperation spanning more than five decades since Bangladesh's independence.
Asked about the growing number of Bangladeshi students coming to China, Reza pointed to the country's world-class research and development as the main draw. "You asked me why a lot of students are coming over to China. I should ask you the same question. Why not? Because China's research and development is world-class," he said.
Reza also praised what he observed in China regarding its citizens' sense of discipline, national pride and cultural richness.
"I was astonished to see in China that people have a deep love for their country, and they will not even drop a scrap of paper on the street. The streets are so clean. People generally abide by rules and regulations," he said. "The culture, the technology, the way people talk and think — all of this is philosophical, and that philosophy can be learned from here. China has had many great philosophers and leaders throughout its history. Over the last 20 years, China has reached new heights."
On global health cooperation, Reza noted China's participation in international programs under the World Health Organization framework, calling mutual health assistance between nations not just a matter of medical science but "a great deal for humanity."
