China's role in global green technology and intellectual property-driven innovation took center stage at a Beijing event on May 12, where officials and experts highlighted the country's contributions to energy transition investment, green patents and international collaboration.
Guy Pessach, director of the IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector (IES) at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), said in a video address that Beijing, as the world's first WIPO GREEN pilot city, has set a strong example for China's green innovation network.
He said China accounts for approximately two-thirds of global energy transition investment and holds 36% of the world's green and low-carbon invention patents — more than any other country.

Peter Oksen, senior program officer at WIPO GREEN, said in a video address that WIPO GREEN now has 21 acceleration projects running in 18 countries.
"China is one of the absolute main countries, with four projects either running or starting up," he said.
Oksen said the Beijing project was WIPO GREEN's first acceleration project in China and the first-ever city-level pilot of WIPO GREEN. Its success has led to the addition of Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shaoxing as participating cities.

Zou Ling, WIPO GREEN ambassador in China, said Beijing's five-year pilot has developed a model that has now expanded to multiple Chinese cities. He said China has contributed more than 13,000 green technologies to the WIPO GREEN database, and 16 Chinese innovation entities have joined the WIPO GREEN cooperation network.

Xie Hongxing, director of the Bluetech Clean Air Alliance (BCAA), said China has become a world leader in green technology innovation. From 2016 to 2024, the total number of green and low-carbon patent applications published globally exceeded 1.5 million, with China accounting for 45% of that total.

Omer Hiziroglu, partner at Azur Strategy, highlighted China's global leadership, saying: "There is no doubt in my mind that China is leading the world in green technology transformation. I think recent events across the world have made this abundantly clear even to the most skeptical. I am in awe of China's example and its commitment to clean technologies."

The event was jointly hosted by the Beijing Municipal Intellectual Property Office, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, and the WIPO Office in China, and organized by the BCAA. It brought together more than 150 representatives from government, international organizations, green technology companies, investment institutions, legal service providers and the media.
The gathering also marked the conclusion of the second China Greentech IP Management Clinic program and saw the release of the Progress Review of the Beijing Pilot in WIPO GREEN Acceleration Projects.
