China congratulates Laura Fernandez on election as Costa Rican president

BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- China congratulates Laura Fernandez on her election as president of Costa Rica, foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Wednesday.

Lin made the remarks at a regular press briefing when responding to a question on the election of Laura Fernandez, the candidate from the ruling Sovereign People Party, as president of Costa Rica on Monday.

Costa Rica is an important country in Central America, Lin said, adding that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Costa Rica 18 years ago, bilateral ties have developed smoothly, and exchanges and cooperation across various fields have steadily advanced, bringing benefits to the people of both countries.

The spokesperson said that China attaches great importance to its relations with Costa Rica, and stands ready to work with the new government of Costa Rica to act in the fundamental interests of the two peoples to promote practical cooperation in various fields and enrich the connotation of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
