Scholars visit Yongding Tulou

A group of scholars from around the world visited Yongding Tulou in Fujian province on Friday, and they had the opportunity to learn about the architectural wonder and its history and culture from up close.

Yongding Tulou is a type of Chinese rural dwellings of the Hakka people in Fujian province. The local government recently launched a digital tourism program that provides AI-powered experiences to visitors to Yongding Tulou.

Avijit Banerjee, head of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture (Cheena Bhavana) of Visva-Bharati University in India, said the city of Kolkata has a large Hakka population, and that the Hakka people have played an active role in promoting the economic and cultural development of India. Banerjee said he has been very interested in their origin, and that this visit to Yongding Tulou has provided him with that opportunity.

During their trip, the scholars learned about the Hakka people's great attachment to the clan, and that families of the same lineage live in the same Tulou with each family separated by a slate, which allows them to keep a close relationship without invading their own privacy.

Anna Kireenko, director of the Baikal School of BRICS of Irkutsk National Research Technical University in Russia, said Russians attach the same importance to families as Hakka, and that there are many families in Russia where the old generation and the young generation live together.

"It is admirable that the Hakka people migrated from China's north to the south and then to the world with their strong ability to adapt to the new environment," said Peng Bo, an assistant researcher at the Institute of World Economics and Politics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
