BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with Gavin Newsom, governor of the U.S. state of California, in Beijing on Wednesday.

Noting that China-U.S. relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world today, Han said that despite some ups and downs, cooperation has always been the mainstream, and the relations have recently begun to stabilize.

He called on the Chinese and U.S. governments, and people from all walks of life and localities, to step up communication, exchanges and cooperation to jointly promote the sound and steady development of China-U.S. relations.

The cooperation between Shanghai and California is a good example of sub-national exchanges between China and the United States, and has huge potential for future development, Han said, expressing the hope that Newsom's visit will inject positive energy into promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation and improving China-U.S. relations.

For his part, Newsom said that China's development achievements, especially in the field of new energy, are impressive.

U.S.-China cooperation is not a zero-sum game, Newsom said, expressing his willingness to use this visit to further promote closer exchanges and cooperation between California and China in such fields as economy, trade, climate change and people-to-people exchanges, so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples.
