Decoupling 'not in Denmark's interest': MFA

COPENHAGEN, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released its new Foreign and Security Policy Strategy on Tuesday, which, among other things, aims at pursuing a pragmatic and balanced approach to China.

While the document is alert to potential risks associated with Denmark's relationship with China, it is also aware that current economic ties with China provide substantial growth potential for Danish exports.

"We will often have to strike a balance... it is also not in Denmark's or the EU's interest to decouple ourselves from China or to disregard the growth potential for Danish exports," said the strategy.

Recognizing that the world's economic and geopolitical center of gravity is shifting towards Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, the document calls for Denmark to increase its own diplomatic and economic engagement there.

According to the strategy, such engagement would allow Denmark to seize the growth opportunities offered by the region, particularly in green transition, sustainability and digital transformation, "thereby strengthening existing partnerships and establishing new strategic collaborations."
