China slams Australia hypocrisy, double standard on human rights issue

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday slammed Australia for practicing "hypocrisy and holding double standards" on the human rights issue.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks on a daily press conference as a report from the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) found that 80 percent of Islamic people in Australia have faced prejudice or discrimination.

The report, issued by the AHRC on July 20, also revealed that about one in four survey respondents said they felt unable to speak up or act when they experienced discrimination.

"Findings from the survey show Australia's Muslim communities make significant economic, community and charitable contributions to Australian society, yet they experience widespread discrimination," the report said.

Zhao also mentioned another report conducted by the Australian National University that said people with Middle-Eastern names are less likely to get a job than those with English names.

Zhao said it is absurd that some Australian politicians, based on lies and prejudices, made irresponsible remarks about the so-called human rights situation of Muslims in Xinjiang and defamed China.

He urged these Australian politicians to take off the hypocritical mask of "human rights preachers," and reflect on and solve Australia's own Muslims' human rights problems instead of smearing other countries under the guise of human rights.
