BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese officials on Friday said Africa should not be an arena for competition among major countries, but a broad platform for international cooperation.

It is a shared responsibility of the international community to support Africa, said Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao at a press conference in Beijing.

China has adopted a completely open and welcoming attitude toward cooperation between other countries and Africa, he added.

Echoing his view, Wu Peng, head of the Department of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Africa's needs must be placed at the core of China-Africa cooperation and international cooperation with Africa.

He said the cooperation between China and Africa remains beneficial to each other as both sides are entering new stages of development.

The launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area is expected to stimulate the huge market potential of the continent with a total population of some 1.3 billion, he added, calling for a vision of long-term development.

Wu Peng also noted that currently, the market is playing an increasingly important role in China-Africa cooperation. The content of cooperation is upgrading from simple trade of goods to industrial capacity cooperation, and Chinese enterprises operating in Africa are evolving from project contractors to business investors and operators, he added.

The new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation has brought new opportunities for China-Africa cooperation, he said, adding that the two sides are seeing growing possibilities in fields such as e-commerce, 5G technology, medicine and healthcare, as well as industrial and supply chains.

Wu Peng also said that the country's confidence in enhancing this cooperation will not falter because of the pandemic or temporary economic recession.

He added that China will further promote cooperation after the pandemic, and produce tangible results benefitting the two peoples.
